about

The work commissioned this year by Radiophrenia Glasgow Festival 2020 can now be accessed here; the 48 minute "Overwhelming Waves" -- an essay in radio signal and radio noise, features voice narrations, reflections on the collective radiophonic and sonic unconscious and the origins of my obsession with the shortwave spectrum as a utopian dreamspace... In addition for this release, I have included a archival recording of a piece created in 2007, somewhat similar in aims and and yet with a a different technological set up. Overwhelming Waves is more verbal and takes you into the philosophy of listening with the earth's electromagnetic resonance in mind. Let The Black Crosses Fade is more an atmospheric, unexplained sweep and trippy and offers less rationale; it is dedicated to Tom Carter and Christina Carter who I spent time with years ago in Austin, Texas. Their house had black crosses painted on the doors (by the previous tenants).

Gnarly Root Queen was originally Released on Idiosyncratics netlabel. Fraz deWaard wrote: "...The first one is by Jeff Gburek, who recorded this piece as it happens not too far from Vital's HQ, in Germany's Kleve Nur Nicht Nicht studios. For this he used electric guitars, shortwave radio, ebow, oscillators and voice. It's a remixed version of something that has been released by Digitalis Industries. It's a great piece of humming sounds, soft spoken text and the crackle of short wave. A rather subdued piece, minimal, but forever changing it's course, shape and color. A delight to hear from this already remarkable composer."
