about

Djalma Primordial Science was the theater & dance ensemble for which I created these sound-scapes. Although I've been out of the direct picture for 10 years now, apparently my mixes are still in use by Ephia and other people who adapted our workshop style to their own.

Djalma Primordial Science was, in my view, a Gaian oriented, physiological, psychonautic, animistic and shamanic theater art project. The music contigent of the ensemble had many members and we had many other collaborators but the core had been I and Ephia since 1998 and we worked together all over the globe. Our workshops were performance journeys in themselves and vehicles for psychic transformation and empowerment. The mixes, the sonology here, and the montage choices, reflect what had been a shared interest in butoh studies, tai-chi, qi-gong, yoga, tantric and the "aboriginal" or "indigenous" music in ritual dance theater context.

My sound investigations seemed to start with post-minimalism in the West (here representing by my remix of Nur Nicht Nur label-mate Stephan Froleyks  and then the shift to maximalism of Balinese Gong Kebyar or the thrashing drums chants of Tanzanian witchcraft  -- back over to Navajo and Cree medicine songs -- and in part 2 there is Peruvian ayahuasca curandera singing -- mixed with my own field recordings of Indonesia and Mexico, my own minimal electro-acoustic accents, percussion, contact mics -- a music in search of the heart-beat of the planet and collective connection. The meshing and clashing of musique concrete, trance, glitch dub vibes, insects and amphibians, microsound and reductionist sine waves -- all of it flows --perfectly unresolved. These sounds were typical of the Djalma Primordial Science workshops from 2000 until 2010-ish when we were working in the indoor workshop context. When we were off-grid, I was on the ground with acoustic raw matters -- some field drums and the rustling of juniper clacking in New Mexico desert winds for example -- but  these mixes show some of that outdoor practice too.

I dedicate this album to all the shamans and healers who taught us how music, dance movement and earth connection can be our best medicine.
