about

Two days before a performance at Seligmann Arts Center (Chester NY, 4/10/16), I saw a performance of John Cage’s “How to Get Started” at Bard College. Originally, Cage extemporized monologues as a sound engineer captured and subsequently layered the recordings while Cage continued to speak. At Seligmann I decided to try achieving a similar effect using an iPad app called Samplr, reading lines from a poem published in In|Filtration: Innovative Poetry from the Hudson River Valley (which the event was celebrating). The poetry is derived from output of Charles O. Hartman’s PyProse generator, edited and titled “Back Up State”.
