We had set out optimistically, but a little too late in the morning, on the winding path above the hills of Belovo, heading towards a site of an old church ruins (which didn't make much sound) called Levke, while underestimating the steepness of the path, the relentless cloudlessness, the formidable sun, and the actual distance until the path dipped into the shady forest. It was supposed to be perhaps only 10 km away but water supply ran low and my shoes, a half-size too large, started to feel unsupportive on that brittle rocky, uneven, and occasionally muddy from recent deluges terrain going always up and ever at hairpin turns that showed you the other path you'd be walking on over the abyss only 50 meters away. Needless to say, the discovered why the water was considered blessed holy water when we finally arrived some hours later. I recorded, drank of the perpetually gushing spring, filled the bottles and began the walk back down passing only the logging trucks piled high and dragging even another trailer full of logs on the precariously banked mudslide curves of the mountain forest roads.
