Poznan, Bukowska: Elevator, stairway, engines, broken parking ticket vendor, other inexplicable whines and squeals

about

Ensuite recent themes regarding the anthropocene -- the anthro-po-obscene -- this update to my Polish Soundscapes collection is another track of rather grinding social realism, the virtue of which consists partially in the fact I can verify I am presently alive nearly a year after recording this material which captures starkly the ready-made noise-sculpture park just a few yards off my bedroom window. Poznan's air-quality rating seems to be very competitive with Beijing and Bombay, although I am not sure we can be proud to win that gold medal. Long terms residents have developed layers of callous to deal with the conditions and personal perfume showers before leaving the house help to conceal the particulate matter, monocarbons and other gas-attacks. Other people smoke, which masks the stink. Adaptive diet regimes are quintessential for long term survival here. The noise however is a subliminal factor. I remember all of a sudden why New Yorkers speak so loudly. It's not egomania, not all of the time, anyway, it's part of the volume wars of civilization. Noise has a way of generalizing to everything other than the one who speaks (somehow throw me a study to support this intuition) so that even the speech of other human beings is even part of the welter of noise one must erase to speak one's own words. And we are forgetting that some of that noise is actually a signal from our friends or loved ones who are drowning in the cacophony.
