Angelina's Incantations Afternoon Session, Belovo 2021

Recorded in the village of Belovo, Bulgaria. Белово, България
This was my wake-up call one morning in late August 2021. Song, rhythm, blended light, the cadences of doves & other feathered friends and incidental mechanical, anthropocenic sounds. It took weeks to gather information about the song. I listened repeatedly, closely, let it run in the background.. One comment from the Soundcloud reads "beautiful Aksak, subtle but solid metric!". I sent the recording to Bulgarian friends who explained that the language was not Bulgarian but perhaps a Romany mixed with Turkish. From what I experienced in the village over 3 years of intermittent field work there, this made sense. Further comments characterized it as ritualistic, ancestral, magical, some kind of prayer, blessing, invocation. One of the kids from the village recognized her singing from the recording and told me her name: Angelina. I understood then that the voice came from a woman I had encountered many times on my walks. Bulgarian, Romany, Anatolian music/language: the powerful e/invocation of various spirits, local and ancestral. The intentionality of the performance seems clear and the passion endures the length of the recording and registers as an act of ritual labor punctuated by pauses for breath. I had three more opportunities to record and two others to listen, silently (when I was away from my gear) over the course of 5 days. Another comment from the Soundcloud followers: "I do not have a clue of Bulgarian, so I cannot help with the lyrics, but to my knowledge of Romanian traditionnal music, the kinds of scat singing you have around 7 minutes, is definitely secular, and is something you find in more contemporay panbalkanic music." I used this piece as the audio stem for the piece called Permanent Arrival on the his album. I am happy to share this mysterious and raw document with you. Proceeds from this track will be paid forward to Angelina and her family.
