An introductory mix. Rusty swings and children in a school-yard in Chuatomec, Mexico. Frogs from Batopilas, Baranca del Cobre. Microphones dragged over stones, sand, dry leaves and buckets in Mountainair, New Mexico. Matachines dance in La Bufa, Mexico... the stamping of feet, the rattles tied around the ankles of the dancer are "naine" --- butterfly cocoons --- threaded together. I play along with them on my violin and I am delighted by the fact that matter how crazy and off I am playing, they seem to be happier and happier. This was, after all, an unexpected weekend "tesquinado", a kind of fiesta where one drinks fermented corn liquor--- very refined and clear like tequila---and some cans of Tecate. I am told that these are the same songs and dances that would accompany the peyote rituals. They seem to play these reels without any sense of time, repeating the phrases and altering the modes slightly as they go along and during the peyote dances they would last for hours on end, part and parcel to the trance created by the mushroom and the music itself.
