about

The day of our arrival at Kraimaryuu (small resort town near Burgas, Bulgaria) I was struck by this sky formation (to see photos of these skies click on individual tracks one through three). This sky dissolved but also returned, reconfiguring itself: cloud fronts joined, separated, with a seam and I became very curious about what kind of hot and cold ionizing fronts could constitute this kind of strong line, almost like a floating wall in the sky. Of course, it is clothed in clouds. Or is it? Are clouds the only energies that pattern the sky? Not that I've heard of... but neither do I hear people talking about the other invisible lines of force.

My new album "the radio & the sea" seeks to lend form or voice to these atmospheric phenomena as witnessed by radio waves recorded in shortwave and middle and vlf bands along with hydrophones and coastal recordings of the surf.

Rummaging through imagery to decide upon the final keeper for the album cover, I decided on a different image that gives more sense of the sky and the Black Sea and the scale at which the human being stands surrounded by such massive, beautiful and sometimes frightening forces.

This poltergeisty photo of the night sky over Burgas Bay (click on track four for the photo) taken a few minutes before going to sleep. A few hours later in the wee hours our car window was smashed and I was robbed of all my recording and radio gear.

With the greatest of luck, after days and nights of depression and anxiety, almost everything was returned to us without any noticeable damage. The Burgas police said it had been in the safe-keeping of some Bulgarian gypsy. Now I am willing to accept that my material was protected by a Bulgarian gypsy "thief". I never wanted to believe what these "authorities" said but maybe, after all, there is luck in such an experience, a blessing even. I thought I had been cursed... instead... who knows... Now you can hear the noise the world conspiracy of invisible forces wants to keep you from hearing. Well, part of the noise, anyway ;)

The gear (stolen and returned, thanks to the efforts of Burgas Police at Station Number 4): Hydrophone, Tecsun 600 & 660 usb lsb multuband radio recievers, walkie-talkies, sdr-rtl aerial resonance (received through cellphone) and Zoom6.
