about

For some time now I have been researching analog means towards the ends of doing electro-acoustic improvisation in the live settings where I do my field recording. Mainly, I want to avoid laptop and it's conditioning approach as interface, be more compact, and also find a way to render my listening more alien, to be able listen more deeply, but not give in to the idea that my auditory position and devices are without profoundly interactive aspect; and that would be the only way to assert any kind of objectivity in the process, by permitting the fact of my physicality to be part of the field. Partly the deconstruction involves the desire experience one's self in a new way and the strategy of defamiliarization, being able to hear one's own auditory imprint, perhaps more the way it is heard or intuited by other creatures, forms part of this research. this derives from a childish desire to communicate with animals and engages the adult desire to turn simple devices into more complex ones with further implications than were intended in the design of the tools themselves. To be able to play a concert in a place that would be an unlikely place, such as this environment, where I might meet with spontaneous players, without formally announcing any presence of myself as divisive, separate from the environment. Field recording demands long time listening processes, gradual evolution, hence the length seems appropriate, and it is my feeling, backed up by observation, that the way we listen and the space of listening, is undergoing radical transformation. Longer periods of not listening to music, not really listening to anything in particular at all, seem to almost be demanded for personal sanity. Constructed listening spaces, installations, seem to bridge the gap between the world as a dynamic sonosphere and free, wandering ears and perceptions. sound-walks seem to provide some people with quiet & reflective occassions for listening. Concerts of electro-acoustic music, employing field recordings often can be wonderful but in my own life practice, I've grown tired of the formalities and the institutional demands of these enclosed gardens & white cubes and most of all the absence of connection to other species and free elementary entities that we need to be in contact with in order to regenerate our relationship to the earth. This may sound like a manifesto and it may be just that. For my own purposes at least. More noise and citations to follow. Enjoy. Headphones may be useful to catch the background/foreground dynamics. But more important calm and quiet and time to listen without grasping for what's not there. See for yourself.
