Biertan, rain arrival, village life, nocturnal hounds

about

After leaving Sigisoara, we trained a few stops to Dumhaven, then caught two rides with truckers to the village of Biertan. All along the straggly route, Romany sitting in front of shops in the villages, waving, asking where we were going. We are beginning to meet people now. On the surface of the front streets, Biertan is squeaky clean, resembles a tourist trap, which it is, owing to the well-preserved Evangelical church, a fortified citadel, with thick walls and towers, built by the Saxons who were invited there by the Hungarian who needed help against Turks or Mongols or whoever the invaders were, look it up in a history book, if you need be sure. But it's interesting. The result is a enclave, a church (which we did not visit because they charged a fee to get in) surrounded by walls inside of which resides a few building complexes (over & against which sounds echo curiously), tool-sheds and the hotel for the tourists (predominantly German & Swiss-German) who get trapped there as part of a bus tour. We were allowed to pitch our tent inside the walls of the complex where we waited out the invasion of the barbaric rain that came in a flash just after we drove in the last stake. The next day we walked in circles around the fortified church, still never going inside, wandering into the remote areas where village blends with green, grain, twisted trees, grave-yards, crumble-shacks & outrageous hills. Later again, it would rain. In the evening I would listen closely, to almost nothing.
