TORRENT: BOOST ALL BANDS

about

TORRENT was composed/assembled in stages throughout 2006 & 2007 and therefore crosses & re-crosses the gaps of my involvement with certain aesthetic streams of the Berlin scene or scenes, apart from my work with the dance company. It was the period where I could say I had been virtually on the cusp of being at war with the audience, at least conceptually, and there are certain moments which may appear to be sonic assaults. 10 years later, I feel differently. The abrasive palette now seem integral to the entire spectrum of sounds that I freely explored in that moment and there is even a hint of liberation from all the ideas I had been struggling with. This might also mean, paradoxically, that they are embodied in TORRENT, with it's broken data streams, bi-polar lurches, nose-dives, crumples and inexplicable silences. Some sounds would eventually migrate into other albums ( Red Rose for the Sinking Ship & Remote Provinces) but this sequence was realized in my home studio on the 5th floor roost-dungeon near Sudstern (in Kreuzberg) where the loudness and the quietness of the sounds themselves were achieved in a neutral zone of indifference and existential indifferentiation, an environment of solitude and free from consequences, almost as if a padded room in a lunatic asylum. I wanted at one point to call the album Homeostasis. Yet I had the keys & the liberty to come and go, as I pleased. I worked with a wide array of software and hardware which drifts far under the bridges of memory by now but one field recording, from the screeching metal docks of Hamburg, remains fixed in my mind because recorded on a walk with Tetuzi Akiyama, who remarked that it sounded like a Xenakis trombone piece. This bandcamp version is a bit different from the CD version I prepared in that it is not separated into 28 different tracks. I had sent this 28 track version to Creative Sources and it was accepted by Ernesto for publication but my budget would not permit me that year to carry the project through. This edition appears without track divisions since I felt the continuity would be spoiled by any delay in buffering between the tracks which would perhaps also mislead the listener into believing each track was like a "song" -- whereas each track in my original conception, was just a block of sonic information. I do have the hard copy of the CDR and will ship a copy to anyone who will buy the download for more than 10 euro and sends me a private message.

dedicated to the memory of Mika Vainio.
