about

There are no tracks but songs and compositions scattered across the recordings made direct onto cassette tape in various locations throughout Poznan in the merry month of May, 2018 and there are abundant references to soundscapes emerging within the confused performative contexts of being alone playing in a tunnels, viaducts, enjoying the reverb resonance and then suddenly being washed over by crowds of students, high-heel clickers, cell-phone gabbers, the invariable woosh of cars, trucks, clacketty trams and yodel-dee-dee of emergency vehicle sirens. Some of the segments were recorded live on the zoom6 in one location and then played back and over-dubbed in another location onto cassette, all external noises internalized. Everything seems to have been recorded back onto the zoom6 live hours later with some cassette pitch manipulation on the cassette machine I had borrowed from Hubert Winczyk, like it was all done in one afternoon and evening, edited and then forgotten until just now -- the photo however is from another day in June, 2018. Throughout the recordings I kept thinking about Cage's Chicago piece or something similar, getting sounds from all over the city or something like Eric Cordier where he puts microphones all over North coastal France and mixes them down into one illusory juncture. I didn't really think about reproducing this idea but rather mostly about emigration of the street musician (I didn't put out a hat ever) or homeless person, one who maybe had a guitar, while studying the dynamics of physical displacement, vagabondage, nomadicism & the utopia of the recorded relics that were evolving as time went along. I think the reason no one ever talked to me directly was because playing a guitar in the streets in a symbolic gesture of being a lonely crackpot jobless drifter of no use to any normal aspiring middle class person and in addition I played no trace of recognizable repertory.
