John El-Manahi The shortwave pieces by Jeff Gburek are among my favorite music. To be clear, calling them “music” is really an abbreviation of their complexity. They are communiques to the outer realms, transmissions of prayers which beg us to answer.

about

Flux and Permittivity is a short presentation of my enduring enthusiasm for the shortwave radio as a medium not only for sound-art but as a philosophy of induction. Ezra Pound's statement that the artist must be an antenna for "the race" comes to mind. And I hope that when he said "the race" he actually meant "the species" and I personally take this to mean "all the life on this planet"-- and furthermore, all that lives within us and without us which we with our bios-bias take to be non-living-- for I feel, and use the shortwave radio to sense, the cosmos is indeed alive with strange and inexorable energies.

Track 1 is a remix that was commissioned by The Radius -- a radio-art collective in Chicago that broadcasts intermittently and archives itself online here:: theradius.us -- to be presented along with the retrospective of my Radio Wide World project. 20 years after I made the original recordings direct to cassette tape, which you can listen to and read about at soundcloud.com/radio-wide-world there is a world of difference in my own remixing tools and recording media. For this piece I used the digitized versions of the original tapes and improvised/composed a collage of some my favorite moments rendered in Audiomulch.

Track 2 uses live captures of shortwave radio made during the recent near-earth passage of the asteroid named 2012 DA14. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_DA14
I set up my gear to record the asteroids electromagnetic scatter and prepared to synchronize my actions with the online coverage via NASA
and just before, I noticed it was my friend Stephen Ellis' birthday,
so I made a radio-poem and sent him a podcast

In addition to this downloadable release, I am pleased to announce in the merchandise column, that I have one copy of the 10th anniversary 4cd edition of Radio Wide World (2003)--- with art-work made by the en.ve.lope project (Denver, Colorado)--- packaged neatly in vellum envelopes. See below and consider making a donation to the project.
